Shopping can be dangerous
Okay, so I haven't posted in a few days. The past week has been been totally hectic with waiting for Jake's test results to come back, Trace's ortho appointment which we found out he does indeed need special shoes and orthodics to help straighten out his knees. We are busy planning Trace's birthday for next weekend, mixed with rearranging our home, and me finding time to edit my book.
I needed a shop day!
For me I love window shopping. Just because we are low income and don't have a lot of money doesn't mean we cannot dream about things, or go and have fun looking around at things. So on the weekend we took the kids to the carnival in town, went on a few rides with the coupons we had, ate some cotton candy and mini donuts and had a blast, and then we headed over to a store (WHICH SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS) to do a bit of shopping.
I saw some pretty baskets for my shelf at a good deal and grabbed them, and I pushed the stroller down the aisle when suddenly something smacked me in the back of the head! It hurt really bad and DH came toward me to see if I was okay. A table had fallen off the top shelf above me and hit me. It wasn't secure in any way, and was thick--made of resin with metal legs folded under it.
I sat down to relax for a minute, giggling slightly because I felt foolish at how much my head hurt. But what hurt me more was my neck and shoulder. I was also not impressed with one of the employees who basically said we should not fill out the accident report, because then I'd have to go to the hospital, file a report and it could take a long time.
I felt fine. It was an accident of course, despite the store being liable for keeping their aisles clear and their merchandise secure. DH decided to fill out the accident report and I told him I was going to walk with the baby and keep looking until he was done.
My right eye began to hurt.
The back of my head began to throb.
I felt sick suddenly and just wanted to lie down on the floor.
Instead I found a chair to sit in, and what happened next I don't remember because I basically passed out. And ambulance was called, and then DH took me to the hospital to get checked out. Apparently I sustained a concussion and whiplash with soft tissue damage to my shoulder and neck.
The way the doctor figures it is that because the angle the table was at, how it came down on me, it forced my neck forward jarring it. No wonder my neck hurt more than my head. He told me to take Advil, go home and rest and I would feel worse before feeling better.
I never knew shopping could be so dangerous. More than just spending money, you could lose an eye, leg, your memory or worse. Big department stores spend millions in litegation when I did an online search on falling merchandise, and to my surprise I found out happens more often than I ever realized. How difficult is it to secure items you stack on a top shelf? How difficult is it to not put things you know consumers will buy up high so they have to use a ladder or step on the shelf disturbing other merchandise and endangering their own lives? That's like inviting your grandmother over in a wheelchair and telling her to grab her own damn glass on the sixth shelf next the sand bag filled with flour.... LOOK OUT!
I was less than impressed with both the ambulance drivers who tended to me as well as the store employee who kept going on and on about how the table wasn't heavy, it couldn't have hurt me that bad and yata yata...
The doctor at the hospital informed me it's not how heavy the item is, it's the angle of descent at which it falls and lands. A 2lb soup can fall off the shelf and hit you in the head and you can get a concussion.
Anyhow I'm feeling a bit better today. I have had a headache (but that happens when a flying table knocks you over) LOL, and my shoulder and neck hurt like (bleep bleep) which will heal in time.
So all my fellow friends BE WARNED while shopping. LOOK UP. I went there to find a table and chairs. Well I found the table. Thank God the chairs didn't dive bomb me too, or I'd be eating soup through a straw! Next time I shop I'm wearing a helmet.
